Tucked just off a winding scenic highway near the town of Gauley Bridge, Cathedral Falls is a sight that lives up to its name. Cane Branch takes a dramatic plunge over layered sandstone cliffs into a shallow pool. Its landscape brings the grandeur of a Gothic cathedral to life. At 60 feet tall, Cathedreal Falls is one of the tallest waterfalls in West Virigina.

Along Midland Trail National Scenic Byway (U.S. Route 60), it is one of the easiest waterfalls to access in the state. There is a small, designated parking area along a curve on the highway. Due to this ease, it is a favorite for both seasoned adventurers and casual sightseers.

A paved path leads to a bridge with good views of the waterfall. For a closer look, there is a short dirt path to the base. This path is narrow in spots and not universally accessible.

My Cathedral Falls Visit

Cathedral Falls was my first stop of the day. When I arrived, there was only one other car, a couple who were already at the base of the falls. Thankfully, I only had to wait a little while before they wrapped up their photos and left. Then, I had the whole waterfall to myself! I took dozens of photos and videos before putting my phone and camera away to truly soak in the splendor.

I never get tired of waterfalls. They are each fascinating and beautiful in their own way. Plus, a waterfall is never the same – water levels and the surrounding environment constanly change. You can revisit and have an entirely new experience.
