Tucked away in the town of Valdese, North Carolina, unassuming McGalliard Falls Park offers a delightful blend of natural beauty and local history. The centerpiece is a stunning waterfall, where the water tumbles into a serene pool. Explorers can also step back in time with the preserved remnants of the historic mill or test their balance on the suspension bridge that sways gently over McGalliard Creek.
McGalliard Falls
There are two options to view the waterfall: McGalliard Falls Trail to the base and the overlook above the brink.
Waterfall
McGalliard Falls cascades 40 feet over a large outcropping and into a shallow pool. It is one of the more accessible waterfalls in area.
Grist Mill
Meytre Grist Mill was built in 1906. A flood in 1916 destroyed the original water wheel and they switched to turbine power. The mill manufactured corn meal, flour, and hammer meal for livestock until 1941. It was rebuilt with the creation of the park in 1982.
Trail
McGalliard Falls Trail is a short 0.4-mile path. The paved trail leads visitors from the parking lot across the creek at the top of the falls. Then there is an unofficial steep dirt path around the mill to the bottom of the waterfall.
Overlook
A stone overlook can be found behind the picnic shelter. From this vantage point, you can peer across the creek at the mill and down at the rock outcropping. It’s an excellent chance to catch both in one glance.
McGalliard Creek Bridge
By the overlook, a half-mile trail leads to a 160-foot suspension bridge over McGalliard Creek. The wide gravel path is mostly flat after the initial steps.
After crossing the bridge, continue another 1.5 miles to reach Valdese Lakeside Park.
Wildflowers and Wildlife
American hog-peanut, Asiatic dayflower, cardinal flower, panicled tick-trefoil, partridge pea, scarlet morning glory, small white morning glory, spotted jewelweed, and wingstem were in bloom during our September visit.
While in Valdese, make sure to take in the stunning thirty-by-ninety-foot Village Park Mural. The mural is part of a small park with picnic tables on Main Street. There are 51 hidden objects in the painting just waiting to be found. Artist Clive Haynes included images of the town’s earliest settlement and its transformation into a vibrant community.
I know some feel uncomfortable going across a hiking trail suspension bridge, however, I look forward to seeing one. It gives a little ‘bounce’ in your step! Love the look of this Grist Mill too! As always, thank you for sharing your travels.
