An International Driving Permit (IDP) is an ID that translates your driver’s license information into 10 languages. This is key for travelers who want to drive around the world; many countries do not recognize a U.S. driver’s license by itself. An IDP is recognized in over 150 countries and is valid for 1 year from date of issue.
Some countries do not recognize a U.S. license but will recognize an IDP. Other countries may recognize a U.S. license but only with an International Driving Permit. Even if an IDP is not required by the country, rental car companies may still require one. Therefore, it’s important to research before you go.
For a full list of countries that honor the IDP and their requirements, review this AAA application.
AAA is easier if you have a branch location nearby since they allow you to go in person or mail the form in. AATA only offers a mail in option. I went to a local AAA branch for mine.
What Do I Need to Obtain One?
First, you will need to download and fill out the application. Then, you will need to bring the form to the branch office or mail it in along with:
Two original passport photos
A valid U.S. driver’s license (or a photocopy of both sides if you are mailing in)
Your $20 permit fee
You don’t need to pass a written or driving test to get an International Driving Permit. It is merely a way to translate and confirm that you have a valid license.
My Experience
As I mentioned, I went to a local AAA branch office. Prior to arriving, I filled in the form and had passport photos taken. AAA will also take passport photos in office if you prefer, as the woman in line in front of me did.
Once I reached the counter, all I had to do was pass over the form and photos. The employee seemed surprised that I was prepared with everything! She took my license information and handwrote it inside the International Driving Permit. Next, she glued one of the passport photos to that same page. The other photo she stapled to my form for them to keep on file. After a couple of AAA stamps in the IDP, my payment was the final step. It took 5 minutes or less.
They also sell plastic covers for the IDP. I didn’t buy one at first because I thought I could find it somewhere else. Turns out it was harder than I thought to find one; so, I went back to AAA and purchased it. You don’t need to have one but it does offer some extra protection since the permit is paper – especially if you are going to be in a rainy area or if you are someone who tends to jam things in their bag.
Do you have an International Driving Permit? If so, share your experience!
I’ve never needed one, but I wondered do you need to be a AAA member for this service or can anyone go there? Thanks for the great tip on getting ready for a big trip!
I actually didn’t know about this! I’m not sure what it’s like for us Canadians, but I’ve never rented a car in our travels (yet). I’ll have to look into it, good to know!!
Hey Sarah! I didn’t need an IDP for South Africa but I got it just in case I ended up crossing a border. It was super easy and relatively cheap though so I think it’s definitely worth looking into if you do plan on renting a car in the future 🙂
It’s been over 25+ years since I’ve had to do this, and I’m sure the rules have changed some. This is something a lot of people might not think about when traveling–excellent info to know & be aware of.
Guided tours do make life easier when you’re visiting an unfamiliar place! I like to drive when I can because it gives me more freedom on what I can see 🙂

Hey Diane! No AAA membership needed. I’m not a member and just walked into the office.

Thanks Kristin! It’s probably something a lot of people don’t think about. I didn’t really know about it prior to my trip.
We continue to love all the information, tips and more. Again, thank you. You are making the planning of a future trip a lot less stressful.
Thank you! Always happy to help make trip planning easier for everyone. I want to make sure you can enjoy the fun of adventure with less stress 🙂
I’m not thinking of doing much driving, hoping to book good tours. However, the information will be of value. Thank you Steph
