When planning a day trip, there are several questions you should ask. How long will you be gone? What activities you are doing? What will the weather be like in the area? How remote will you be, and will you have cellular/internet access? Based on your answers you can create a list of what you need to bring. For a basic day trip, below are my 12 must-have items.

Must-Have Items for a Day Trip

1. Collapsible Backpack/Bag/Pack

For simple day trips, I love to use a lightweight and collapsible bag to carry everything. I used to use a collapsible backpack but have switched to a fanny pack on days when I don’t need a lot.

These collapsible bags can be easily stored in another bag or vehicle until they are needed.

2. Water

Always bring water to drink or have on hand in an emergency. My backpacks and fanny packs always have a pocket for a water bottle. Even when you don’t think you’ll need it, having a backup water bottle is essential.

I had heat exhaustion once driving through a refuge. It was so hot that day, getting in and out of the vehicle at all the stops gave me a major headache, and I felt dizzy and weak. Not only was I able to quickly drink a lot, we were also able to pour some of the water on a towel to lay on my head and neck to cool my temperature.

3. Snacks

I rarely go anywhere without some kind of snack. Just like water, food can make a huge difference in an emergency. Or if you are someone who gets hangry like me and you run into an unexpected delay.

Something as simple as nuts, cheese crackers, or fruit snacks can give your body the energy and pick-me-up it needs.

4. Sunscreen, Lip Balm, Sunglasses

If your day trip spends any time outdoors, bring (and apply!) your sunscreen and lip balm. Add some sunglasses and you are ready to enjoy some fun in the sun.

5. Phone and External Battery/Power Bank

I use my phone for a lot when traveling – directions, maps, trail details, photography, and texts to name a few. I grew up when there were no smartphones, and it is funny to think now that I don’t feel comfortable going anywhere without it.

Because I use my cell so often, especially for driving directions, I make sure to have an external battery as a backup power source. It has saved me on more than one occasion.

6. Copy of Tickets or Reservations

When I pre-reserve or pre-pay for admission, I bring a version of the confirmation that I don’t need an internet connection to pull up. This can be a printed paper copy, download, or photo saved to my device.

7. Bandages for Cuts or Blisters

Having a couple bandages on hand is never a bad thing. I am more prone to cuts and tears, so I ensure I pack a few Band-Aids in different sizes and shapes.

8. Light Jacket

A light jacket is perfect for layering and to protect against wind and sudden storms. These tend to pack down tightly so it’s easy to carry and throw on. If it has a hood, there’s no need to bring a bulky umbrella.

9. Camera

I rarely take any trip without some kind of camera – either my DSLR or phone. Capturing my amazing surroundings and adventures makes me so happy. With photos and videos, I can be transported into my memories at any time.

10. Tissues or Wet Wipes

Tissues and wipes have several uses. In addition to your sinuses, tissues can be used to stem blood from cuts or replace toilet paper when it’s unavailable.

Wet wipes clean your hands, counters, tabletops, toilet seats, and shoe soles. They also wipe up small spills and remove light stains.

11. Keys

This one is a given – you need to travel with the key to your house/accommodation and vehicle if you are driving. Depending on how much space is in your pack, you may want to limit the amount on your keyring. Take off any ancillary keys or store loyalty tags.

12. Wallet

Carry cash and/or a credit card. You never know when you might need it in an emergency, like if your car breaks down or you need to go to the hospital. Because I often hike in state parks or reserves, at a minimum I carry a few dollars to pay parking or entrance fees. You may also want some money for window shopping or souvenirs depending on your trip.
